I hope when I read this again I am still providing for my family and am not giving them a hard time when I am told to do something. I hope that my dad's restaurant is doing amazing and is living up to the expectation we had of it. I will be taking my test on June 2nd at 8:55-9:45. the poet Juvenal said Rome “anxiously hopes for two things: bread and circuses ” bread (free grain from the state) and entertainment (Circus Maximus, Colosseum), partly to keep them alive, and partly to keep them quiet, distracted, and docile military generals worked that angle - lead an army that conquers a land, then give them a share in the spoils soldiers’ loyalty was to their military leader, not necessarily to Rome or the Republic Serves as consul (one year) Appoints himself governor of Gaul Pompey is jealous, becomes his rival Caesar’s armies clash with Pompey’s in Greece, Asia, Spain, and Egypt (Caesar - winning!) In 44BC he is named dictator - first for six months, then for life

notes

farmers found it hard with the labor  many farmers were former soliders  as the republic became more unstable general began seizing greater power  caesar governed as an absolute ruler  he granted roman citizenship to many people in provinces  after caesars death civil war broke out again  rome was at the peak of its power in the begginning of August's rule  after he dies the government that he established maintained stability  Rome emphasized the values of discipline, strength, and loyalty  The roman's were practical people  Most people lived on the countryside They believed in powerful forces and spirits  Wealth and land was a big difference in how people live  Barely anyone had stuff they needed to live  government provided free games, races, mock battles, and gladiator contests

Punic war

The Punic War was fought by the Romans and Carthage. Carthage attacked Rome from the north after crossing Iberia. Rome burned Carthage's walls for 17 days and then took the remaining 50,000 people and turned them into slaves. They used boats in naval battles that Rome won. They were fighting for land and valuable goods.

Government

Their government was cruel because it was a tryannt and tryannts were a very cruel type of government and had very serious consequences for very little crimes that they may have done. And the Roman government had Patricians and they were in charge of making laws, dealing justice, and commanding the army. This is simular to our U.S. government because our leader is a president and they are in charge of making laws, dealing justice, and commanding the army. So they are pretty much the same because they have the same duties of each other.
